Hide//Seek//Difference//Desire//Northwest

On May 12, 2012 join the Space Tacoma and Queering the Museum project in the opening of Hide//Seek//Difference//Desire//Northwest, a queer art exhibit that explores the themes of same sex desire in American art at The Space Tacoma. Doors open at 7:30 pm with performances by Tender Forever.

Hide//Seek//Difference//Desire//Northwest is a local level response to the nationally traveling exhibit Hide/Seek: Difference and desire in American Portraiture currently on display at the Tacoma Art Museum. The exhibit features 19 local artists from the Pacific Northwest, creating a PNW portrait of queer culture, exploring themes of same sex desire.

The opening of the Hide//Seek//Difference//Desire//Northwest will be curated by Erin Bailey, co founder of Queering the Museum project (QTM). QTM is a coordinated intervention into representations of LGBT/Q people in museums. QTM facilitates critical dialogue between community members and museum practitioners addressing the role that museums play in forming social norms around gender and sexuality. QTM seeks to continue working on the inclusion of queer culture in museum exhibits and programs with a queer history exhibit and digital storytelling project.

Citizen Phirom | May 8th | Chop Suey

letterpressed handbill by Leigh Riibe at Bremelo Press

Citizen Phirom is a benefit show to help our friend pay for citizenship so they can vote for the first time. This is especially important since the next presidential election will be this November. There is going to be an awesome lineup including The Fancy, Wishbeard, and Glitterbang with DJ kKost.

A message from Phirom:
5 Facts:

1.
I was born in a refugee camp in Thailand because my family fled my homeland of Cambodia to escape genocide.
2. I have never set foot in my homeland.
3. I became an orphan in 2009, losing my mom when I was 11 years old and then my dad at 27.
4. I am not a U.S. Citizen.
5. I need your help to become one, so that I can vote for the first time.
All my love,
p

that's what she said.....art auction in olympia, wa

Each month artists donate new works based on their interpretation of a different concept. The art is displayed for one month at Quality Burrito Restaurant in Olympia, WA where the public bids. At the end of the month art finds its way to winning bidders and the proceeds are donated to various inspiring organizations.

Lynda Sherman and Leigh Riibe, quote by Jude Miqueli

This month the concept is "That's What She Said". Lynda Sherman of Bremelo Press and I have donated a collaborative letter pressed poster and it will be on display through the end of May 2012. All proceeds will be donated to Courtney's House, an organization committed to providing loving environment for girls and boys between the ages of 12 and 18 who are survivors of sex trafficking.

Below are some of the donated art works:

mixed media painting by Ryan Erev

"Women and Elephants Never Forget"- Dorothy Parker
   drawing by Jessie Frances

"Knit for Fun and Profit" mixed media by Kelsey Smith

Live Through This Mix Tape with Letterpressed Sleeve

As a part of my photo exhibition at Honey Salon in Bellingham this month, I have made a limited edition mix tape with a custom letter pressed sleeve. There are only 100 of these in existence! All of the type is hand set one letter at a time, and the photo is a halftone plate I had custom made at Boxcar Press in New York.

These tapes will be available for sale at Honey Salon on Friday April 6th for my opening, and online soon. Stay tuned!

Thanks to Lynda at Bremelo Press, I was able to make this happen. I extend my gratitude to her patience, generosity, and knowledge.

Live Through This: A Retrospective | the early work of Leigh Riibe

Please join me for the opening reception!
Friday April 6th from 7-10PM at Honey Salon
located at 310 W Holly, next to Rocket Donuts

About the show:

"It’s rare that a retrospective come before an artist show any of their work publicly. As a teenager, I produced a lot of art including collage, paintings, and photographs that I never allowed myself to show in a gallery setting mostly out of fear. Now that I am 30 years old, I have decided to have my first solo show be a collection of my photography spanning my teenage years (1994-2000) as a way to validate my history as an artist and honor what I’ve lived through.

I attended Catholic school from kindergarten through 8th grade, which I found to be more and more oppressive the older I got. There was just no tolerance for a young girl’s artistic expression, let alone opinions! By the seventh grade, I found myself getting in trouble for everything from dying my hair to writing a report speaking out against Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (a report which was literally banned from school). I was heavily influenced by the music I immersed myself in. The Riot Girl Movement was born just a few miles from the little Seattle suburb I was trapped in. My older sister was attending college at Evergreen in Olympia watching this history unfold. She would mail me records from Kill Rock Stars, Sub Pop, K Records, Chainsaw, and the like and I would listen to them on repeat until I could recite every word. I remember the first time I heard Bikini Kill, I felt like I could breathe again; my rage was valid. I used this music as an escape from a place I found to be dull, lifeless, and without promise and as the ammunition that would propel me into a world better suited for me. I wanted so badly to scream, but I hadn’t found my voice, so I screamed through images.

The photos in this collection were taken before I had access to digital photography. Some were shot with a little red Kodak point-and-shoot, and some with a manual camera: a Minolta XD11 which was manufactured for the first time in ’77. All the photos are portraits of myself and my friends and are titled after songs I would consider to be a part of the Soundtrack of My Life."

There will also be collateral materials including a mix tape and a zine. These will be for sale at the opening reception at Honey Salon on April 6th and soon to be online. Stay tuned! Here is a mini sneak preview of the zine...

MARCH - APRIL ASSIGNMENT: Just Another Manic Monday: Songs about disorders

MARCH - APRIL ASSIGNMENT
Just Another Manic Monday: Songs about disorders
Due: April 30th, 2012

Lately the Pacific Northwest has been experiencing some pretty manic weather. From sleet to snow to rain to hail to sun all in one day. While the weather patterns try to make up their minds as we ease out of winter and into spring, we thought it would be the perfect time to put together some mixes that are just as manic.

There are a lot of songs out there about being freaky, being crazy, killing yourself, going schitzo and the like, so let's hear em! Might as well go with the flow as they say. It could just be the cure for those pesky winter blues.

We hope you have fun with this assignment. And please don't forget to make beautiful cover art, include a track list, and send $3 with your mix.

Objective:
♥ Share music, make art, and keep post alive.♥

How it works:
Following the assignment and the rules, make a mix and submit it by the deadline. The submissions will be made into a compilation, mixed and matched to other Tender Validators, and mailed out the following week. Participants receive an anonymous mix, a compilation, and other various tender validations. Be sure to include (on a separate sheet of paper) the mailing address you’d like your mix to be sent.

Rules:
→ 12 song minimum, 1 disk/tape maximum
→ Track list must be included
→ Cover art required
→ Return address provided (on a separate sheet of paper, please! )
→ Please keep mix anonymous (you can use an alias)
→ $3 for postage

Drop Locations:
→Zebra Club 1901 1st Ave. Seattle, WA (1st & Stewart by Pike Place Market)

Mail In:
→Leigh’s Apartment (message me on FB, or email me at tendervalidations@gmail.com for address)

Thank you for participating!

R.I.P. Christopher Reimer

Christopher Reimer was the guitarist for noise-pop band Women from Calgary, Canada.  He was 26.  His sister Nikki has created a memorial website to honor his life.  He will be missed.

Tender Validations + Luxe Riot Screen Print Studio

Tender Validations has been hard at work making precious ephemera to put in with the packages we mail out to participants. Thanks to Luxe Riot Screen Print Studio, we were able to print some stickers with our own two hands. They turned out pretty nice, if I don't say so myself!

The process was pretty intense, mostly due to the fumes.

But we managed to pull it off, regardless of our altered state.

Many thanks to Eric Green for his generosity.

Remember, if you'd like a sticker in the mail, the due date for the next assignment is February 29th (in one week)!

Making Valentines for Whitney

Whitney Houston was a star, there is no denying that. Born into a soul family that included cousin Dionne Warwick, spiritual elder sister Chaka Khan, and godmother Aretha Franklin, Whitney started her larger than life singing career when she was only 21 years young. She has touched countless lives with the music she created and spread positivity throughout the world through her lyrics.

To thank Whitney for her contribution to our lives, I am asking that you make her a Valentine. Tell her how she touched your life. Thank her for sharing her talents. And wish her well in the afterlife.

Please share your handmade and/or digital Valentines with us by  emailing a jpeg to tendervalidations@gmail.com. We will be posting submissions on February 14th in her honor.

Here is my Valentine to Whitney:
I remember listening to The Greatest Love of All over and over on a mix cassette tape in the summer of 2001. I sang along at the top of my lungs in my car almost every day. It made me feel good during a time that for me wasn't so great.

Thank you, Whitney.
XO, Leigh

Pillow Fight Designs is back in action!

Pillow Fight Designs is the creative brainchild of Seattle-based artist Leigh Riibe. Starting in 2003, Leigh set out to create accessible art in the form of handmade clothing and accessories including shirts, screen printed tee shirts, totes, and more.

Pillow Fight Designs has transformed itself many times over the years. As a tee shirt company all the designs are conceived and executed from start to finish by Leigh. Meaning the designs are created by her, transferred to film, burned to screens, printed by her hands and sold by her online or otherwise. Pillow Fight as a freelance design gig means working with businesses including High 5 Pie, Fuel Coffee, Molly Moon's Ice Cream, Cafe Flora, Marination Mobile, and Don't stop Believin Records to create tee shirt designs, posters, print ads, design websites, and layout album art for bands like Triumph of Lethargy, Pony Time, and Strong Killings...

Pillow Fight Designs is currently creating one-of-a-kind photo blocks. Using the increasingly popular iPhone app Instagram, Leigh prints photos she has taken in her everyday life, mounts them onto 4" x 4" wood blocks, and resin coats them. They were on exhibition in a collaborative show called "we like you" with Mika Loudon at Fuel Coffee in Seattle from Oct-Nov 2011. Below is a brief description:

"“We Like You” is an attempt at taking something so instant, accessible, and disposable back to a time that was more tangible, artistic and appreciated."

JANUARY - FEBRUARY ASSIGNMENT I wanna make love in this club: songs you wanna hear out.

Due: February 29th, 2012

As a present to you in this brand new year, we here at TVMOTMC Headquarters have decided on a theme that is pretty much wide open. Since getting our toes wet in the DJ thing, we thought it would be a good idea to get some ideas from you what we should play at our next gig.

With this assignment, you can pretend you are the DJ, and make the perfect set list for your DJ night at your favorite club. Maybe you want to go to a dark saloon and hear all the saddest music in the world while you sip on bourbon and reminisce of past loves and losses. Or perhaps you'd like to go to the local goth club and listen to 90's industrial music all night long. Maybe
you'd like to find a nice quiet library in some small town that you can swoon along to your favorite folk records. Or maybe you want to dance all night at a 3-story club in the gay neighborhood and get laid.

No matter what you decide, we hope you have fun with this assignment. And please don't forget to make beautiful cover art, include a track list, and send $3 with your mix.

Objective:
